Asbestos Information, Identification, Counting, Monitoring & Evaluation Services

The Asbestos Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 require exposure to asbestos or asbestos-containing materials, to be controlled.

Regulations prohibiting the use, manufacturing, import and export of asbestos and asbestos containing materials were promulgated by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) on 28 March 2008.

Visual on-site inspections conducted to determine the presence of asbestos or asbestos-containing material. If necessary, we can arrange to have samples of the suspect material identified to determine the presence of asbestos.

The NIOH Occupational Hygiene Section can conduct visual on-site inspections to determine the presence of asbestos or asbestos-containing material. If necessary, we can arrange to have samples of the suspect material identified to determine the presence of asbestos. The Electron Microscopy Unit, within the NIOH Pathology Section, provides a specialised service also for the analysis of bulk Asbestos samples and provides air monitoring using air filters.
