The NIOH library came into being in the early 1960’s. It was named after Major General Doctor A. J Orenstein who had made a notable contribution in the field of Pneumoconiosis in South African miners.

The library is a valuable national resource being the only occupational health library in Southern Africa. The library houses an extensive collection of books including the ILO encyclopedia covering all aspects of occupational health and safety. The library also houses a print journal collection (both local & international) and provides access to over 5 951 electronic journal titles.

Objectives
To provide an efficient and effective customer driven, innovative library and information service in support of research and teaching in occupational health and safety.

Membership
Access to the library is open to the staff of NIOH/ NHLS, Occupational Health professionals, Researchers, Government departments, Students, Labour Unions, and the general public with interest in Occupational Health & Safety issues.
