NIOH Information Services

The library houses an extensive collection of books including the ILO encyclopedia covering all aspects of occupational health and safety

The Libraries are comprised of three (3) libraries under the management and leadership of the NIOH. These are the OJ Orenstein library which houses the occupational and environmental health and safety collection, the Spencer Lister Library catering for the information needs of the NHLS community at large and located at Central, Braamfontein and lastly the Resource Centre (previously known as NICD library) catering for the information needs of the NICD community.

All three libraries play an important role in enabling researchers to conduct world-class, innovative research through the provision of specialized information services that include seamless access to both electronic and print resources.

AJ Orenstein Memorial Library

The NIOH library came into being in the early 1960’s. It was named after Major General Doctor A. J Orenstein who had made a notable contribution in the field of Pneumoconiosis in South African miners.

The library is a valuable national resource being the only occupational health library in Southern Africa. The library houses an extensive collection of books including the ILO encyclopedia covering all aspects of occupational health and safety. The library also houses a print journal collection (both local & international) and provides access to over 5 951 electronic journal titles.

Objectives

To provide an efficient and effective customer driven, innovative library and information service in support of research and teaching in occupational health and safety.

Membership

Access to the library is open to the staff of NIOH/ NHLS, Occupational Health professionals, Researchers, Government departments, Students, Labour Unions, and the general public with interest in Occupational Health & Safety issues.

Legislation

Resource center (previously known as PRF Library)

This library is situated in NIOH building and serves the NICD community. The NICD undertakes research focused on communicable diseases and gathers intelligence on these diseases, providing expertise to the Southern African regions regarding the outbreak and communicable disease burdens such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, respiratory and diarrheal diseases and meningitis. It is the centre for disease surveillance and control in Southern Africa.

Spencer Lister Memorial Library (NHLS Library)

This library formerly known as SAIMR library is based in Braamfontein. It serves the information needs of all NHLS staff members, researchers, students and laboratories throughout the country. The objective of the libraries of the NHLS is to develop and maintain an information service that will provide the staff with accurate and up-to-date information to meet the research, training and diagnostic needs of the NHLS and, in so doing, improve healthcare delivery in South Africa.
