Dr Sophia Kisting

Dr Spo Kgalamono is a renowned expert in occupational medicine and regarded as one of the most influential women in occupational health in South Africa. She is presently the Acting Executive Director for the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH), a division of the National Health Laboratory Service.

Dr Kgalamono joined the NIOH in 2000 and was appointed Head of the Occupational Medicine Department in 2002. With over 20 years’ occupational health experience under her belt, Dr Kgalamono is a joint appointee and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Witwatersrand, School of Public Health. She has co-authored several peer-reviewed journals, and delivered numerous conference presentations both nationally and internationally. Her main area of interest is workplace mental health.

Over the years, Dr Kgalamono received many awards and accolades including the Best Investigator Award in 2010 at the International Mesothelioma Conference in Japan; the Golden Key Award for excellent achievement in 2010; Best local supervisor for Wits Public Health registrar training in 2004; and Best student in Epidemiology in 2001.

In 2011, she was also recognised as one of the three most influential women in public health in South Africa by the Public Health Association of South Africa (PHASA).

Dr Kgalamono sits on several committees including the South African Society for Occupational Medicine; the Occupational Health Southern Africa Journal Editorial Board; the International Working Group on Occupational Diseases; the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases Review Authority; and is a Technical Committee member for the Department of Employment and Labour.

She holds a BCur (Nursing); MBChB (Medicine); a Diploma in Occupational Health (Cum Laude); MMed in Community Health, a Diploma in Public Health, and a Fellowship of the College of Public Health Medicine in Occupational Medicine
