The Quality Assurance Department is a support department of NIOH that is making sure that tasks, procedures and processes are executed exactly as intended every time, hence the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH) Quality Assurance (QA) Department is responsible for dealing with internal, external audits and complaints in the organisation from all clients.
These complaints are studied, analysed and a root cause analysis is done after which the complaint are then closed. We are also responsible for the inspection done to find any variations within the NIOH departments.
The QA department as a supporting structure has ensured that the NIOH laboratories are approved by South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) on the Quality management system and technical competence. By adhering to conformity assessment and calibration facilities, demonstration of their competence, carry out tasks against specified criteria, including criteria in national and/or international guides and standards.
In 2015 alone the NIOH has been able to attain three ISO standards to the list of accreditation namely:
- ISO15189 (Analytical Services, Immunology, Pathology, Electron Microscope)
- ISO17025(Analytical Services Water Testing )
- ISO17020 (Occupational Hygiene Department)

Quality assurance comprises administrative and procedural activities implemented in a quality system so that requirements and goals are met. The administrative part is formed by document control and system management these also help in carrying out process used in the management, coordination, control, delivery and support required in the NIOH laboratories. QA document control is an essential part of the quality assurance system for all aspects of Good Laboratory practice (GLP). It allows us to approve, review and update documents. We are able to make changes and identify revision status, control document distribution, and prevent use of obsolete documents and facilitating proper archiving in the organisation. We continually strive to increase the level of excellence in the services and supports so that it best enhances our service in the organisation.
